Women in Horror | Brittany Blanton
Tuesday Feb 25, 2020
Tuesday Feb 25, 2020
*DICLAIMER* There were some technical difficulties with the audio in this episode. I do apologize for the quality of the recording. *DISCLAIMER*Brittany Blanton is one of those people who always seems to have something on the go. She has the poise and presence of an industry veteran, but hasn’t been involved in film for as long as she gives off, which is, to me, very impressive. Brittany really embodies what Women in Horror Month is all about in terms of work ethic, passion, and seizing the opportunity when it comes. In Just five short years, Brittany has appeared in, or will appear in 24 different projects, with many of them filming later this year. If that doesn’t scream work ethic, I don’t know what does. With just a few more interviews left in this series, I believe Brittany was one of the first - and even now our chat stays with me. She leaves an impression with people, and that is so important in the film industry. With that said though, I’m excited to see what her future brings. An upcoming film called Parallels looks to be a huge stepping stone in her career, not to mention all the many projects that are yet to come. Beyond acting, Brittany has stepped behind the camera a handful of times as well to show off her creative mind. Hopefully there’s more to come from her on that end as well. You can find some of her work, such as her biggest role to-date, Don’t Fuck In The Woods on Google Play Movies, and other streaming services. Women in Horror | Danielle | Ghoulish Cast

Monday Feb 24, 2020
In the world of podcasting, there is no shortage of fantastic things to listen to, and the Ghoulish Cast falls among that grouping. Danielle is one half of said podcast, and along with her co-host interviews any number of guests in an engaging and informative way. They’re guest range from stars to up-and-comers in the horror genre, and every episode is a pleasure to listen to. Danielle has a bit of a history in the podcasting world, and like most of us, has gone through a few changes before landing on a format and style that works for her, and thankfully she had!Danielle’s presence and enthusiasm really shows in her work and passion for horror. She was great to talk to, and has a lot of insight into the podverse, as well as a lot of great stories from both her time on the Ghoulish Cast, and life in general. I’ve talked to a lot of incredible women in my series, and it was really fun to chat to somebody in my line of medium - the podcast. Sharing tales and talking about the industry was really interesting for me on a personal level, and I do hope you find it just as interesting. Danielle puts a lot of work and effort into her show, and it really does come off.If you like the Women in Horror Month interview series I’ve put together, you will absolutely adore the Ghoulish Cast, which, as I said, has amazing guests all the time. Women In Horror | Helen Lyons-Curran
Sunday Feb 23, 2020
Sunday Feb 23, 2020
What happens behind the scenes of films? Well, there’s a lot, and we’ve looked into some of what people do during our interview series, but there’s one woman who really embodies that behind-the-scenes essence. That woman is Helen Lyons-Curran, and she is a director, producer, and writer, and one of her latest projects, Ends Meat is going to have big things coming its way. Beyond that, she is the director of the Starburst International Film Fest.Helen really exemplifies what it means to make sure things run smoothly, and to overcome any obstacles that come her way. Thankfully, as you’ll hear in our chat, she’s had a lot of things run without a hitch, which just goes to show her talent. People want to work with her, and when the rest of the cast and crew are happy, things tend to go pretty well. She also touches on her other projects, such as Choke and her experiences working with different talents, equipment, and on different genres outside of horror. This is what Women in Horror Month is really all about. The behind the scenes people who work tirelessly to bring you the content you see every day. While the cast might be the face of any given movie or show, people like Helen are the heart, backbone, and soul of every production. She’s truly inspiring, and her talent speaks for itself. You can find Helen’s work at her website: www.helenlyonscurran.co.uk Or, you can check out more about her film fest here: https://starburstmagazine.com/filmfestival/Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/Ominous-Origins-1. Women In Horror | Sarah | Geeks Who Eat
Saturday Feb 22, 2020
Saturday Feb 22, 2020
So, during our time with Women in Horror Month, I’ve talked to a great assortment of people, that has been established, but today is a truly different one. Sarah is one of the founders of Geeks Who Eat, a brand dedicated to making recipes based off of films of all genres, and as somebody who is terrible at cooking (even if Sarah doesn’t believe people can’t cook), I found her work to be fascinating and completely unique to the industry. In the time that Geeks Who Eat has been around, Sarah and her husband have worked a great deal of events, and they have even worked for massive production companies in one way or another. She shares her recipes with the world, and they are all completely original as well. From fantasy to horror, there’s something for everybody on her site. However, horror is where her heart is. She has such a passion for food, movies, and especially horror, that it brought her and her husband together in a very touching way.Geeks Who Eat is an incredibly popular website and brand, they have a cookbook on the go, and are looking to build their brand in the near future with other outlets. Sarah is a deeply dedicated and passionate woman, and it really shows in her work. Women in Horror Month isn’t just about celebrating people who work in traditional mediums, that much has been shown throughout this interview series, and Sarah is one of the truly special cases. I’ve never spoken to anybody like her before, and I highly encourage you to visit her website to get some fun and delicious recipes. I know I will. Just think, the next horror or Halloween party you have could blow people away if you use one of Sarah’s designs!Check out Geeks Who Eat here: https://2geekswhoeat.com/Spooky Sarah Says- SpookySarahSays.comGeeksWhoEat on all socialSpookySarahSays on all social Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/Ominous-Origins-1. Women In Horror | Horrocane
Friday Feb 21, 2020
Friday Feb 21, 2020
In the time that I’ve interviewed all these incredible women in horror, I’ve gotten to speak with actresses, directors, writers, performers, but Horrocane is a first. She’s a YouTuber from Australia. So not only is her location unique to the series, but so is her vocation. Talking from experience, YouTube is a tough place to break into. With the constantly changing algorithms, to the near daily updates to the monetization and discovery options, YouTube has made it hard for people who don’t already have an audience, which is what makes Horrocane so special. What started as dreams of modelling has turned into so much more, with her talent in writing, and her ability to give life to other people’s stories. Her channel focuses on creative talent from herself, her acquaintances, and people from the internet, where she, or a guest reads them paired with some great production work. It takes a lot of bravery to start a YouTube channel, and even more hard work to maintain it, but if there is one thing with YouTube, the potential for success is indeed limitless. Horrocane is one of those multi-talented individuals whose hard work and dedication have already started to pay off, but there is room for her talent and her audience to grow. So do yourself a favor and check out her YouTube channel, subscribe to it like I have, and continue to support women in horror, no matter what their chosen medium is. Remember, there’s more than just film out there for these wonderful creators. This is a chance to explore areas we might not have been familiar with, or even known existed. Women in Horror | Elizabeth McCafferty
Wednesday Feb 19, 2020
Wednesday Feb 19, 2020
The great thing about this Women in Horror Month interview series is all the people I get to meet, and I couldn’t be happier about sitting down with Elizabeth McCafferty. She’s a British actress and filmmaker with a passion for feminist horror. She’s had some roles in some pretty large movies, and continues to make her way through the world of filmmaking, but her upcoming project is something she feels very strongly about. Elizabeth is currently funding a project called Love You To Death on Indiegogo, which she describes as a neo-feminist horror flick that deals with revenge and cannibalism. In other words, sign me up! It sounds like an incredible project that hits all the right notes in the world of horror. But she does need our help in getting it funded. As of writing this there is still 14 days left to donate, so I suggest doing so. Every little bit helps, and you’ll be able to find the link to it below. But what about the interview itself? Well, it was maybe the most fun I’d had interviewing somebody in a long time. All the interviews I’ve done so far have been absolutely outstanding, but Elizabeth had so many great stories to share, and we even had an accent face-off! And even though she was put on the spot, she delivered. We shared a laugh and talked about everything from her career to films, to her training and skills. All in all, Elizabeth is the type of filmmaker that deserves a chance, that deserves to really show the world what she can do, and we can help her with that by funding her indiegogo campaign. I would love to see this movie made, both because it looks like a wonderful piece of film, but also because Elizabeth is such a genuine and remarkable person.Love You To Death Indiegogo: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/love-you-to-death--2#/Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/Ominous-Origins-1. Women In Horror | Somica Spratley
Monday Feb 17, 2020
Monday Feb 17, 2020
In the world of horror, there are so many faces behind the scenes that make things work, that helps the machine run smoothly, and one of those faces is Somica Spratley. She is a visual effects and makeup artist with a flare for the creative. Not only is Somica a woman in horror, but she’s also a woman of color, and so much more. We all know that labelling people based on gender and skin color is a cliche, but when it comes to the film industry, it can still very much be an obstacle, even in 2020. However, that doesn’t hold her back, and in fact she uses what some might perceive as a disadvantage to her advantage. There aren’t many women who work in visual effects, or at least not many who get the opportunity, but Somica has used her talent and every tool in her skillset to help her achieve what many others only dream of.Through her talent, she has risen to become a well known, and well respected artist in Alabama, from working on sets to helping others hone their skills, Somica’s empire is quickly growing. In the interview she tells about her struggles, and successes, and how she’s overcome the stereotypes of the film world and beyond. Sadly, it’s not easy for anybody in this industry, but Somica proves that with hard work and dedication, you can overcome any biases that may befall you.Of course her career doesn’t end with makeup and effects, Somica is a woman with all the ambition in the world, and in 2016 she made her directorial debut. She’s also a member of her local union, IATSE 798Below you can find some of her work, which is outstanding. I highly encourage you to check out her portfolio, as this is what Women in Horror Month is all about. The women behind the scenes, the ones who aren’t front and center, but are ultimately the heart and soul of any production.Somica’s website is: https://www.somicaspratley.com/Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/Ominous-Origins-1. Women in Horror | Kino McFarland
Friday Feb 14, 2020
Friday Feb 14, 2020
One of the reasons why I love celebrations like Women in Horror Month so much is due to all the amazing and interesting people I get to meet, and today I got to chat with one of the most fascinating women I’ve ever had the pleasure of interviewing. Kino McFarland is a multi-talented performer, writer, filmmaker, and well, everything, and she even has a stage name, Kino B. Demented! How cool is that? While Kino’s mainstay is sideshow performances, where she does everything from eating fire to walking on glass, and even acts as a human dartboard, she also has an incredibly powerful short story published on her website (which you can find below) based on her own life experiences. She also shines a new light on what it is to be an extreme performer, boasting a masters degree to her belt - which is far more education than I have. She’s incredibly creative and intelligent, and that also shows in her passion for filmmaking. Her microshort, Witch Hunt, was shot very barebones using nothing more than the camera on her phone. Resourcefulness is a quality that not many people can say they have, especially when it comes to making films. It just goes to show that bigger isn’t always better, and that sometimes a little ingenuity can go a long way.Kino is a very passionate woman, and she has a lot of great stories and insights to share, and so I encourage you to listen to the interview, but also take a look at her works online and in person if she’s in your town performing. I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it a million times: without Women in Horror Month, I may never would have heard of Kino, or other women like her, with limitless talents and creativity to share. You can find Kino at any of the links below:https://www.kinomcfarland.com/https://www.kinobdemented.com/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnw0tj5-_Es&t=1sSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/Ominous-Origins-1.
